The number of people in Australia and around the world turning towards a vegan and plant- based diet has grown in leaps and bounds in recent times. I started my vegan food business 5 years ago on my stovetop at home when veganism was seen as an extreme dietary choice that also meant sacrificing flavor. Wow, how times have changed!
The whole reason I began my business was because I wanted to make trying a vegan diet easy for everyone and I am so excited to see people wanting to give it a try. Veganuary offers a perfect opportunity to start the year with a plant- based bang and learn how easy vegan meal prep can be.
So, what is vegan? The definition for veganism goes beyond just the food that we eat but if you are considering dipping your toe into the vegan world then let’s start with your food consumption. Vegans do not eat meat, fish, eggs or dairy products but there has never been a better time to try vegan because there are so many plant-based replacements out there to make life easy.
One of the most asked questions is ‘What CAN I eat as a vegan?’ The answer is anything that comes from plants. This means you can go crazy with salads, vegetables, nuts, lentils, beans, pasta, rice, noodles and all of the wonderful new meat alternatives on your supermarket shelf.
Is a vegan diet healthier for you? The short answer is yes but its like That depends as some vegans can eat very poorly with lots of sugar and carbs and not concentrate on the balance that we all need in our diets for maximum nutrition.
Some other common vegan questions are listed below:
Do vegans drink alcohol? YES!! But what you need to be aware of is some wines and beers use animal products such as fish bladders (eww), egg whites, gelatine and skim milk to clarify and as fining agents. Good news – all hard liquor or distilled spirits are vegan friendly. There are some beautiful vegan wines on the market and some are also organic with reduced sulphites which I have found to be far more drinkable and less headaches!
Do vegans get enough protein without eating meat? YES! **add more here
Do vegans eat pasta? YES, pasta is a wonderful staple of a vegan meal, however, you just need to avoid pasta which mentions egg in ingredients which is usually the refrigerated fresh varieties.
Do vegans eat bread? YES, almost all bread is vegan, including my fave sourdoughs. The only ones you need to avoid are naan breads and crumpets as most are made using milk.
Do vegans eat cheese? NO to dairy cheeses but there are a lot of vegan alternatives on shelf in the supermarkets. You can check out our Instagram for a list of my favorites.
Is peanut butter vegan? YES, nearly all peanut butters are vegan and at 25% protein content - it’s a great for vegans looking to boost protein intake.
Do vegans poo a lot? This is a common question believe it or not! Generally speaking, if you are eating a healthy and well-balanced vegan diet then you will be consuming a lot of fibre from grains, fruit and vegetables which will make your bowel movements very regular. Like any change to your diet, you could find yourself pooing more frequently until your body adjusts to all that wonderful fibre!
